Protest against
Bus Fare Hike
Mabrur Atiqi, Dhaka, 04 November: A grand procession in protest
against sudden bus fare hike was brought out in the district town yesterday at
about 10.00 am. People of walks of life joined the rally. Prior to this, a
meeting was held at Saheed Minar where it was unanimously decided to bring out
the procession because the poor and low-income groups were badly affected due
to excessive bus fare.
They
termed it as a struggle for their existence. No political issue was involved
there, and so people of all walks of life participated in the procession. The
procession rounded up the entire town and chanted different slogans. They
carried different types of festoons and banners with them symbolizing the
feelings of the general people.
Covering
the entire town, the procession again gathered at the Saheed Minar. The leaders
of different political parties unanimously declared the decision that they
would stage a sit in programme for an indefinite period of time unless the bus
owners brought the bus fare back to the previous rate. They also demanded that
the government would take measures to stop the unwanted bus fare hike.
However,
the law enforcing agencies were active enough to maintain a congenial
atmosphere. As a result, no untoward incident took place.
