Changing Role of
Women in Society
Mabrur Atiqi, Dhaka, 04 November: In Bangladesh half of the total
population is women. The traditional role of women is to live inside the house,
give birth, rear children, serve the family members, and make home happy. In
the past they were not allowed to perform any outdoor activities. It seems that
their duties and responsibilities were confined only to household chores.
However,
recently there has been a significant change in the outlook of men in society
towards our women folk. Discrimination against women has been set at naught in
most cases. As a result our women have started to come out of their cocoons and
are playing different roles according to their education, skill, and ability.
They
are no more only the mothers and home makers confined to feeding babies,
cooking food, washing up clothes and dishes, and doing untold other household
chores. They are now taking part in all outdoor activities — official and
non-official, government and non-government, self-employment enterprises, and
business and commerce.
Our women are also rendering highly
laudable service in nursing and teaching. Today a large number of our women are
advocates, doctors, engineers, and journalists and they are showing their
excellence in respective fields. Of course, it is a tremendous progress of our
women folk.
