International
Mother Language Day Observed
Mabrur Atiqi, Mymensingh, 22
February:
Yesterday the International Mother Language Day was observed with due solemnity
in Bangladesh. The day was also celebrated with festivities all over the world.
The day was a public holiday in Bangladesh.
In
keeping with the age old tradition the people of the country brought out
processions in different cities and towns carrying flowers, different posters
and banners. They joined the processions bare-footed singing the historical
song "Amar Bhaier Rakte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulite
Pari?"
In
this way they went to the Central Shahid Minar and other Shahid Minars all over
the country and offered flowers to the altars. The day reminded us of the
supreme sacrifice of the Language Movement's martyrs who laid down their lives
to maintain the honour of our mother tongue 'Bangla'.
Bangladesh
Television telecast live programme from 12 am. National dailies brought out
special supplements and private television channels aired special programmes on
the occasion.
Shilpakala Academy, Jatiya Press Club,
Bulbul Lalitakala Academy, Liberation War Museum, Bangladesh National Museum
and other socio-cultural organisations organise cultural functions on the
occasion.
