A Study Tour Arranged by Dhaka City College

Mabrur Atiqi, Dhaka, 04 November: A place of historical interest means a place which bears the testimony of certain time of history. It should have some important past event worth notable in history. To visit a place of historical interest is not only interesting and exiting but also educative.

Last week the first year students of Dhaka City College arranged a study tour to a place of historical interest. They went to Bagerhat to see the famous Shat Gombuj Mosque and the Mazar of Khan Jahan Ali. The mosque was made in 15th century by Khan Jahan Ali. The students were astonished to see the architectural structures of the mosque. It stands on sixty pillars and has seventy seven exquisitely curved domes.

The area of mosque is very large and charming. The mosque has been declared as a world heritage site. The interior of the mosque is as beautiful as the exterior. The mosque stands on a raised ground. There is a long tank near the mosque named ‘Ghoradighi’. The students also felt ecstasy to see the unique design of the Mazar of Khan Jahan Ali. The tomb is made of cutting stone.

After reaching there, students collected much information about the mosque with the help of the history lecturer. People of the locality also helped them to know about the mosque better. One of the local people said that the mosque was also used by Khan Jahan Ali as his court. Students of Dhaka City College were much benefitted from the study tour.

Report - Arresting Smugglers with Gold

Smugglers Nabbed With Gold

Mabrur Atiqi, Dhaka, 04 November: Five smugglers with 100 kg of gold were arrested at the Shahjalal International Airport. The smugglers were two Thai nationals and three Bangladeshis. The custom officials on duty suspected the smugglers while they were passing through the checking.

On investigation, they admitted that they had gold bars bound with their legs under their clothes. They came from Singapore on the flight of Thai Airways. They also admitted that they smuggled gold and other forbidden materials to Bangladesh by managing some of the corrupt officials engaged in the airport.

The smugglers have been handed over to the police for further investigation. A case has been filed with Airport Police Station in this connection.

Report - Ancient Structures Unearthed

Ancient Structures Unearthed

Mabrur Atiqi, Narsingdi, 04 November: The Department of Archeology recently excavated an ancient city at Sujapur in Narsingdi district. This ancient city is approximately a thousand years old and a large number of archaeological remains were found at the site. The Department of Archeology conducted the excavation under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

The regional director of Dhaka Division, Masud Khan supervised the whole operation. The department started the programme of excavation in 2009. The excavation will continue. During the time they excavated a considerable portion of the site and the rest of the work would be carried out step by step by the department.

The excavated structures are yet to be identified but the archeologists assume that one of those might be a water reservoir. Apart from these structural remains the excavation has revealed some important antiques like semi-precious stones, beds, glass beds, terracotta beds, pottery, northern black polish ware, etc.

The Archeological Department of Jahangirnagar University also took part in this excavation.

Report - Arsenic Pollution in Your Area

Outbreak of Arsenic in Magura

Mabrur Atiqi, Magura, 04 November: The arsenic, the king of slow poison, has recently taken the village Lalpur of Magura in its grip. Most of the tube-wells are affected by this poison. As no attempt on the part of the local government is made to identify, people out of ignorance are drinking water from those tube-wells. 

The adverse effect of this poison has already taken an epidemic form. Nearly one hundred people are suffering from incurable sores in the palms of hands and feet. Many other people, irrespective of children and old people are more or less affected. Hospital sources said, most of the tube-wells in the village are carrying arsenic.

As there is no other source of drinking water, people here are being bound to drink arsenic-contaminated water of these arsenic affected tube-wells and thus gradually heading towards death. It is assumed that if the government does not take immediate measures, the villagers have to face humanitarian disaster because of arsenic.

Thus, it is high time government took necessary measures to solve the problem.
