A Severe Tornado Hits Bhola

Mabrur Atiqi, Bhola, 20 September: A severe tornado hit three villages in Bhola, which killed at least six persons including three children. The tornado hit the villages around 9 pm in the night. The tornado came on the villages suddenly and smashed away thatched huts and uprooted large trees.

Most of the houses were demolished and an uncounted number of persons were injured. Many of the injured persons were admitted at Bhola General Hospital. Many domestic animals were also killed and crops were damaged fully.

Setara Begum, a housewife, described the tornado as a hell fire coming from the sky. She said, "I never witnessed such horrific scene in my life. A large trunk from the sky came down on the village and destroyed everything before my eyes and before we could realize anything."

In fact, the tornado took away everything from the village. Nearly one thousand people have gone homeless due to tornado and they are now living under the open sky. They are urgently in need of food and shelter.

Though few NGOs have come forward with food and drinking water, their reliefs are not sufficient comparing to the need. The local authority has offered very little so far and the homeless people are in dire need of government help for their rehabilitation.

Report - Slum Dwellers And Their Ways of Life in Dhaka

Human Living in Inhuman Condition in Slum

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka, 21 January: There are so many slums in Dhaka city. The living condition of these slum dwellers is a sad tale to tell. All the year round they suffer from various problems.

Among the slums in Dhaka city, Kamalapur slum is noteworthy. There are as many as 300 shanties in this slum where around 3000 people live in extremely inhuman condition. They lead here a very unhygienic life. As they do not have enough water facilities, they are seen to use impure water of the nearby lagoons. They are bound to use the impure water of lagoons as water problem is very acute in slum areas. For days together most of the people cannot have their baths.

Most often they do not have even drinking water. As a result, they suffer from diarrhea, cholera, and dysentery. At the time of a dire necessity they do not have the help of a good physician. To them the city of joy is a joyless city. High-rise buildings are nothing but a joke to them. Posh cars of the rich give them spiteful feelings.

However, women and children are the worst sufferers of this slum. Most of the women living here work as maid servants in order to add to their family income. The children of this slum have no future at all as they are being deprived of education.  They are growing up like dogs and apes. One day when they will grow up, they will definitely adopt the loathsome paths.

The government and the conscious citizens of the country should come forward to rehabilitate these slum-dwellers.

Report - Supply of Polluted Water in WASA Pipeline

 WASA Pipeline Supplies Polluted Water

Mabrur Atiqi, Dhaka, 18 April: The inhabitants of city's Badda area are getting dirty and polluted water supplied by WASA for about last three weeks. The locals alleged that after the recent flood, the water has become very dirty and stinky. In spite of boiling the water for more than half an hour, it does not still become clear and drinkable. They also reported that they had informed the matter to the WASA authorities, but of no use.

On contacted over phone, an official of the WASA said that there might be some leakage in the pipelines through which the dirty and polluted flood water is getting mixed with WASA supplied water. WASA is trying their best to solve the problem, but until flood water recedes, nothing can be done, he added.

Meanwhile, many of the locals have become victims of different diseases drinking the filthy water. They are spending more fuel for boiling and purifying the supplied water, which is causing an extra pressure on their family expense. They have asked for pumping out the stagnant water and repairing the leakage immediately.
